How to Play Splat Zone
Beginner-friendly · takes 2 minutes to learn
Controls
- Desktop: use the arrow keys or W A S D to move.
- Mobile / tablet: use the on-screen D-pad in the bottom-left corner.
- Your character moves continuously in the last direction you pressed.
Painting territory
Everywhere you move, you paint the ground in your color. The more tiles you own, the bigger your territory and the safer you are. There is no "return to base" rule — every tile you touch is instantly yours.
Stealing
Drive into an opponent's colored area to paint over it. Their tiles become yours, shrinking them and growing you. There is no contact damage — you cannot kill another player by bumping into them. The only way to attack is to take their ground.
The Elimination Pulse
Every 25 seconds a pulse fires. The players holding the least territory are eliminated. As the field shrinks the pulse comes faster — every 15 seconds in the final five, and every 8 seconds in a two-player showdown. Watch the countdown clock and make sure you are never in the bottom group when it hits.
Power-ups
- 💨 Speed Burst — move faster for a few seconds. Common.
- 💣 Paint Bomb — instantly paint a large blast around you. Great for a sudden land grab.
- 🧊 Freeze Ray — freeze every other player in place briefly. Rare.
- 👑 Territory Shield — your tiles cannot be stolen for a short time. Very rare — grab it if you see it.
Power-ups appear at random spots and random times. Walk over one to collect it automatically.
Winning strategy
- Grab open ground early. Empty tiles are free territory — claim a big patch before the first pulse.
- Defend, don't wander. A red ring warns you when an enemy is near your border. Turn back and re-paint your edge.
- Hunt weak players near a pulse. Steal from someone just above the cut line to push them under it.
- Keep a gain streak. Gaining tiles for a few seconds straight grants a small speed bonus — losing even one tile breaks it.
